Vagamon

Meadows, pines and a quieter pace

Vagamon lies at about 1,100 m on the western rim of Idukki, where the district meets Kottayam. It has none of Munnar’s bustle: a small junction town, a few tea estates, and all around it smooth, treeless green hills that look more like downland than the tropics.

It is the nearest of Idukki’s hill stations to Kochi and Kottayam, which makes it a favourite weekend escape for Keralites and an easy day trip for visitors who do not have time for the long drive to Munnar.

Top things to do at Vagamon

Walk the meadows

The mottakunnu — literally “bald hills” — are Vagamon’s signature: a rolling expanse of short grass with a small lake at its foot. It is managed as a park with an entry ticket, and is lovely early or late in the day.

Wander the pine forest

A hillside of tall planted pines, cool and quiet under a carpet of needles, reached by a short walk downhill from the road. It is a popular film location.

Climb the three hills

Vagamon is known for three hills sacred to three faiths: Kurisumala, with its crosses and a monastery whose monks run a dairy; Thangal Para, a great rock with a Sufi shrine; and Murugan Mala, with a rock-cut temple.

Paragliding and the adventure park

The grassy slopes at Kolahalamedu are one of South India’s main paragliding sites, with tandem flights offered in season and an annual flying festival. The adventure park nearby has a cantilever glass bridge and other rides; check what is operating, as activities are sometimes suspended for safety inspections or weather.

How to get to Vagamon

  • From Kochi: about 100 km, 3–3.5 hours via Thodupuzha or Pala and Erattupetta. The Vagamon day tour from Kochi does the round trip in about ten hours.
  • From Kottayam: about 65 km, around 2 hours. Kottayam is the nearest major railway station.

Insider tips

  • Come on a weekday. On Sundays and holidays the meadows and pine forest are crowded.
  • Mist rolls in fast, especially from June to September. If the hills vanish, wait — it often clears.
  • The final approach roads are narrow and winding; avoid driving them after dark.
  • Accommodation is limited compared with Munnar. Book ahead for weekends.
