Tea estates and a wooded peak in morning light in the Munnar hills

Where to Stay in Idukki

Estate-view resorts around Munnar, spice-garden hotels at the gate of Periyar and quiet nights in Vagamon.

Where you sleep shapes an Idukki trip more than almost anything else. The hills are at their best at dawn and dusk, the drives between regions are long, and the difference between a room in a noisy bazaar and one looking over a tea valley is the difference between a stopover and a holiday.

Most travellers split their nights between Munnar and Thekkady. In Munnar the choice is between the convenient but busy town and the resorts scattered through the estates at Pothamedu, Pallivasal, Chithirapuram, Anachal and Chinnakanal, anything from 10 to 45 minutes away. In Thekkady nearly everything is in Kumily, within a short drive of the park gate. The hotels below all have pages on Trip.com, where you can check live rates, photos and guest reviews; the star levels shown are Trip.com’s.

Booking tips

  • Book early for peak dates: April–May, Onam, Diwali and above all Christmas–New Year sell out, and prices rise sharply.
  • Check the real location: many “Munnar” resorts are 15–25 km from town. That is fine — often better — as long as you know and have transport.
  • Ask about the access road: some hillside properties are reached by steep, narrow tracks that small cars and nervous drivers will not enjoy, especially in rain.
  • Heating and hot water: from December to February confirm that the room has reliable hot water and extra blankets or a heater.
  • Monsoon stays: rates drop from June to August. Choose somewhere with covered verandas and a restaurant on site, because you may not want to go out.
  • Drivers: if you are travelling with a hired car, check that the hotel has driver accommodation.

Prefer not to organise it yourself? The multi-day tours from Kochi and Madurai include hotels and transport in one booking — check which category of hotel your option uses.

Where to stay: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to stay in Munnar town or outside it?

Outside, if you have a car and want views and quiet — which is what most people come for. Stay in town if you rely on buses, want to walk to restaurants or are only there for one night.

How many nights should I book in Munnar and Thekkady?

Two or three nights in Munnar and one or two in Thekkady suits most itineraries. One night in Thekkady is enough for a boat trip and a spice plantation; two lets you do bamboo rafting or a longer walk.

Can I stay inside Periyar Tiger Reserve?

Yes. The state tourism corporation (KTDC) runs a small number of properties inside the reserve, including the Lake Palace, which is reached by boat. They book up early.

Are there good homestays in Idukki?

Many — particularly around Kumily, in the spice and cardamom plantations, and in Marayoor and Kanthalloor. They are often the best way to eat real home-cooked Kerala food.
