The Best Idukki & Munnar Tours

Fourteen tours, ranked by what they actually deliver in the high ranges — not by who pays us most.

We rank these on four things: how much of Idukki you really see, the quality of the guiding, the value for money, and what travellers say afterwards. Tours that solve a genuine problem — estate access, a jeep-only track, a long ghat drive, a ticket that sells out — rank above those you could easily arrange yourself.

We earn a commission if you book through the links below, at no extra cost to you. Prices and ratings are the ones shown on GetYourGuide when we compiled the list; several newer listings have few or no reviews yet, and we say so. Always check the live price before you book.

How we rank these tours

We look at four things, in this order:

  • What you actually see. A “Munnar” trip that spends eight hours in the car and one in the hills is not much of a Munnar trip.
  • Problems solved. Estate access, jeep-only tracks, sold-out tickets and long mountain drives are what a good operator takes off your hands.
  • Value. Not the lowest price — the most trip for your money, especially for groups sharing a private car or jeep.
  • What reviewers say afterwards. We read the critical reviews, not just the glowing ones, and we tell you when a listing is too new to have any.
Our honest advice: the hills reward time. A day trip from Kochi shows you the headline sights, but mornings and evenings are when Munnar and Periyar are at their best. If you can, stay at least two nights in Munnar and one in Thekkady, and book the short local tours once you are there.

Choosing a tour

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Munnar tour?

For most visitors staying in Munnar, the tea trail, factory and tasting tour, followed by a half-day guided trek. From Kochi, the private day tour that includes Eravikulam National Park.

What is the best way to see Periyar?

Stay in Thekkady and take the first boat of the morning, or book the Forest Department’s bamboo rafting directly. If you want it organised, a Thekkady day tour bundles the boat with a jeep ride, spice plantation and Kathakali.

Do I need a tour at all?

Not strictly — a hired car and driver will get you to most places. Tours are most useful for tea estate walks, treks, jeep-only places like Kolukkumalai, and for day trips from Kochi when you do not want to plan the logistics.

Are tours available in Hindi, Malayalam or Tamil?

Many local guides speak Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi and English. Check the languages listed on the booking page, or message the operator after booking.
